The literary basis of the show - a poem by Mikhail Lermontov "The Tambov Treasurer's Wife" paints the picture of life in Russia after the Patriotic War of 1812.
The poem exposes the drama of everyday life that devalues a person and turns a man into an object. The plot, involving a love conflict, deals with the issues of honor and dignity of the Russian officers - patriots and the winners of the war.
The poem, which became the starting point for creative research study by vocal quintet "Aquarelle", serves not just as a plot outline, but also as a kind of camertone for the selection of music for this project. Indeed, romance, as a vocal and poetic genre is a triangular structure, in which words, music and speech are equally important.
Synthesizing the classic Russian romance with the wonderful pieces by the composers of the 20th century (such as Petrov, Schwartz and Vysotsky) the program "Love, Dreams, and a Dozen Romances," showcases the romance genre at full scale. All musical pieces in the stage play have been specially arranged a-cappella style. In this format the project can radically change the viewers' attitude toward the old-established genre of romance, to restore the appreciation of the works and their authors, to revive the names and biographies of undeservedly forgotten Russian composers and poets.
The theatrical play "Aquarelle" gives the viewer the lucky opportunity to experience a story of love, with its' ardent confessions, passionate delusions and bitter disappointments, as the plot transitions from one romantic song to the next.
